Organic Mattresses Provide Natural Sleep

Mattress manufacturers are joining the push for a healthy environment by incorporating natural and organic materials into their construction standards. This change from synthetic to organic also provides many benefits for sensitive sleepers and those who suffer from asthma or allergies. Natural materials, in particular latex, provide resistance to allergens such as dust mites, mold and mildew and also conform to the body in a similar fashion as memory foam.
Getting a good night’s sleep often depends on how comfortable the mattress feels to the user and their individual need for support. Some people prefer a firm mattress while others need softness in order to relax and sleep. For either condition, new mattress designs made from latex, cotton, bamboo and wool are available in various degrees of softness.
Latex Mattress Characteristics
Latex mattress manufacturing developed in 1929 with a method known as the Dunlop process. Still used today, mattresses made purely from this type of latex processing are typically quite firm. A newer, high-tech method known as the Talalay process allowed the ability to create a softer form of the natural latex product. Although Talalay latex mattresses are typically are much more expensive than the Dunlop versions, they can be formed into softer shapes and retain their resiliency. Their lasting quality often offsets the higher price created from requiring a longer manufacturing and processing period.
Some people are allergic to latex in its purest form. When used in mattresses, the material is washed to remove the proteins that often eliminate an allergic reaction to the product. Also, layers of padding between the core of the mattress and the outside protect anyone from having direct contact with the latex. Many mattress sales offices will supply a sample of the mattress construction that can be evaluated before making a purchase.
Organic Mattress Materials
In addition to natural latex, many organic mattresses contain cotton, bamboo and/or wool for padding and cover tops. Some manufacturers produce a 100% organic product that does not use chemicals during any of the processing. Wool covers and pads tend to absorb moisture making it an ideal material for staying cool and dry during the night and reducing discomfort and interrupted sleep. For those people sensitive to wool products, hypoallergenic wool is commonly used for padding and rarely causes an allergic reaction.
Benefits of Organic Mattresses
Organic mattresses provide a clean alternative by reducing pollutants during the manufacturing process. The materials, natural latex in particular, has good resistance to allergens. In addition, organic mattresses are biodegradable, a good thing to consider for future generations who will have to deal with landfill issues.
Another new mattress option that once serviced the hospital industry exclusively is the Nexgel product. The construction consists of a honeycomb grid that contains mineral oil set at the right consistency for support and strength. Manufacturers of these mattresses advertize the ability to support the body while eliminating all pressure points.
Choosing an organic mattress over synthetic styles may cost a little more but could result in a better night’s sleep and a longer lasting product. Helping the environment may also be a reason to purchase either a fully organic product or one that is partially green. Some mattress manufacturers offer 65% organic mattress for an average cost similar to standard synthetic products.
